Drawing from religious scriptures and historical references, Minister Swaray articulated the intrinsic value of labor, emphasizing its divine endorsement and fundamental contribution to societal progress. He heralded ongoing legislative efforts aimed at modernizing labor laws to meet contemporary challenges, citing recent strides in finalizing the draft bill on Industrial Relations and Trade Unions. This legislation, poised for enactment, is anticipated to foster industrial harmony, essential for bolstering productivity and economic growth.

Furthermore, Minister Swaray spotlighted initiatives geared towards ensuring the health and safety of the workforce, including the imminent enactment of the Occupational Health and Safety Bill. Stressing the pivotal role of workplace well-being in enhancing productivity and reducing business costs, he reaffirmed the government’s commitment to fostering a conducive environment for both workers and employers.

Addressing concerns over foreign labor influx, Minister Swaray delineated the implementation of regulations aimed at regulating work permits to mitigate unfair competition and prioritize local employment opportunities. He elucidated provisions mandating structured skills transfer programs, designed to empower Sierra Leonean workers and augment productivity.

Highlighting the ministry’s proactive approach to enforcement through integrated workplace visits, Minister Swaray reiterated the imperative of upholding labor standards to cultivate harmonious work environments conducive to talent development and economic prosperity.

In alignment with President Julius Maada Bio’s ambitious agenda, Minister Swaray affirmed the ministry’s unwavering commitment to facilitating job creation, citing the forthcoming rollout of a dedicated app to track employment-related data as a testament to their dedication.

In a poignant homage to labor unions, Minister Swaray echoed the words of Martin Luther King Jr., extolling their historic role in enhancing national strength and prosperity. He extended an olive branch to organized labor, pledging collaborative efforts towards advancing common interests and ensuring equitable treatment of workers.

“We are fully aware that laws, without full enforcement, cannot change our current situation. In that regard, my ministry has institutionalized integrated factory/workplace visitations to get a firsthand account of compliance with labor standards and adherence to other workplace laws and regulations.” – Hon. Minister Mohamed Rahman Swaray concluded.
