As the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) prepares to elect its new members for the 2026–2028 term, Sierra Leone has officially presented its candidature, with Ambassador Kalilu Totangi leading the nation’s campaign. In a formal presentation to UN election officers in New York, Ambassador Totangi outlined Sierra Leone’s commitment to sustainable development, human rights, and global cooperation.
Ambassador Totangi, serving as Sierra Leone’s Deputy Permanent Representative for Political Affairs to the UN, emphasized the country’s readiness to contribute meaningfully to ECOSOC’s mission. He highlighted Sierra Leone’s recent achievements, including its election to a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for 2024–2025, which underscores the nation’s growing role in international diplomacy .
“Sierra Leone’s journey from a post-conflict nation to a proactive participant in global governance demonstrates our dedication to peace, development, and human rights,” Ambassador Totangi stated. He also noted the country’s efforts in promoting gender equality, youth empowerment, and climate resilience as key areas of focus for its potential ECOSOC membership.
The presentation comes after Sierra Leone’s successful tenure on the UN Security Council, where the nation advocated for reforms and highlighted issues pertinent to Africa and the global South . Ambassador Totangi’s leadership in civic education and democratic development, notably during his time as Chairman of the National Council for Civic Education and Development (NaCCED), has been instrumental in shaping the country’s international engagement strategies .
Sierra Leone’s bid for ECOSOC membership has garnered support from regional bodies, including endorsements from the African Union and ECOWAS, reflecting confidence in the nation’s capacity to contribute to the council’s objectives . The upcoming election will determine if Sierra Leone secures a seat, allowing it to further its commitment to global development and cooperation.
As the UN General Assembly convenes to vote, Sierra Leone’s delegation remains optimistic, viewing ECOSOC membership as an opportunity to amplify its voice on critical issues and to collaborate with international partners in achieving sustainable development goals.
