Anti-Corruption Commission Engages Immigration Officers in Kono to Strengthen Anti-Corruption Measures

Koidu, Kono District, June 13, 2025, a team from the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) in Kono paid a courtesy visit to the Immigration Office in Koidu as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen anti-corruption awareness and compliance in public institutions. The visit was led by the newly appointed Regional Director, Michael Sesay, and forms part of his broader initiative to engage public sector offices across the district.

In his address, Regional Director Michael Sesay emphasized the importance of holding customized meetings with public officers, noting that such engagements are crucial in preventing corruption. He highlighted key compliance obligations, particularly the Asset Declaration Exercise, urging all staff legally required to declare their assets to do so promptly and accurately.

Mr. Sesay also underscored the value of establishing Integrity Management Committees within public institutions. He encouraged the Immigration Office to set up such a committee, describing it as an effective mechanism for promoting transparency and accountability.

Additionally, he stressed the importance of maintaining a Gift Register a tool that allows public officials to disclose gifts received in the course of their duties. He reminded staff of the need to consistently comply with workplace anti-corruption policies.

Senior Investigations Officer Dauda Kaikai, attached to the ACC Kono office, highlighted the importance of collaboration between institutions in the fight against corruption. He encouraged open communication and mutual support in achieving shared goals.

Investigations Officer Mohamed Sajuma also spoke on the role of the gift register. He cited real-life instances where public officers were cleared during investigations due to their proactive disclosure of gifts a practice that promotes accountability and trust.

Public Education Officer Patricia J. Sannoh urged Immigration staff to report any instances of corruption. She provided the Commission’s toll-free reporting lines: 8515 (available on all networks), 077-985-985, and 077-986-986.

Foday Sana Marrah, Officer-in-Charge of the Immigration Office in Kono, expressed gratitude to the ACC for the engagement. He acknowledged the importance of the anti-corruption measures discussed and expressed willingness to implement the recommendations. However, he also raised concerns about operational challenges faced by the office, including inadequate mobility and insufficient staffing at border-crossing points. He called on the Immigration head office to address these issues to enhance their effectiveness.
