The Government of Sierra Leone has successfully evacuated 24 citizens and embassy personnel from the Islamic Republic of Iran to the Republic of Armenia, according to a press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation on 3 March 2026.

The evacuees include 14 students, one private citizen, three Sierra Leonean diplomats, and six locally recruited staff members of the Sierra Leone Embassy in Tehran. The evacuation followed a recent escalation of military strikes and retaliatory actions in the Middle East, prompting the government to activate contingency measures to safeguard its nationals abroad.

According to the ministry, emergency protocols were triggered in response to the evolving security situation. The Foreign Ministry, in coordination with Sierra Leone’s diplomatic missions, closely monitored developments and organized the evacuation process.

The government also reassured the public that Sierra Leoneans residing in other countries within the region including Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Israel have been confirmed safe based on reports from Sierra Leone’s diplomatic missions in those countries.

Although the press release did not provide a detailed timeline of the evacuation, diplomatic sources indicate that the operation required close coordination with regional partners and transit authorities to secure safe passage from Tehran to Armenia.

Armenia was selected as a temporary relocation point due to its relative stability and accessible aviation connections. The move demonstrates the government’s focus on ensuring immediate safety while assessing longer-term arrangements for the evacuees.

The largest group among the evacuees14 students highlights the vulnerability of foreign students during regional crises, especially those without nearby family support. The inclusion of embassy diplomats and locally recruited staff further reflects the operational disruptions that instability can cause to diplomatic missions.

The ministry emphasized that the safety and welfare of Sierra Leoneans abroad remain a top priority and pledged to provide further updates as necessary.

Considering the fluid security environment, the government has advised Sierra Leoneans in affected areas to adhere strictly to local safety directives, including curfews and emergency procedures. Citizens were also encouraged to maintain regular contact with family members and Sierra Leone’s diplomatic missions for guidance on repatriation options or additional assistance.

Analysts note that the successful evacuation demonstrates effective crisis management by Sierra Leone’s Foreign Ministry and underscores the importance of diplomatic networks and international cooperation during emergencies.

However, they caution that sustained support for evacuees including onward travel arrangements, temporary accommodation, medical or psychosocial assistance, and possible repatriation will require adequate funding, logistical planning, and inter-agency collaboration.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that it will continue to monitor the situation closely and engage its diplomatic missions to ensure the continued safety of Sierra Leonean nationals as developments unfold.
