In response to heightened concerns raised by the National Security Council (NSC), the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) has reaffirmed its decision to uphold the ban on mask devil processions and lantern parades due to potential security threats.

The NSC expressed apprehension over the security risks associated with these traditional festivities, prompting the SLP to maintain the moratorium. Despite ongoing evaluations, certain esoteric groups such as Orjeh and Hunting, demonstrating better organization and posing fewer security risks, have been granted permission to participate in these events.

However, all Regional Police (REGPOLS) of the SLP have been instructed to ensure that unauthorized mask devils or lantern processions do not occur within their respective jurisdictions. This measure aims to reinforce security protocols and prevent potential threats stemming from unregulated events.

The decision underscores the SLP’s commitment to prioritizing public safety and national security while acknowledging the cultural significance of these traditions. By allowing selected groups to participate, the police aim to strike a balance between preserving cultural heritage and ensuring public safety.

The enforcement of these directives by REGPOLS across the country will be pivotal in maintaining order and safeguarding citizens during upcoming festivities. The SLP’s ongoing reviews and assessments of the situation demonstrate their dedication to adapting security measures in response to evolving threats.

As the ban persists, the Sierra Leone Police remains vigilant in their efforts to protect the public and uphold peace and stability throughout the nation.

This stance by the SLP reflects the government’s proactive approach to addressing security concerns while respecting cultural traditions, underscoring the delicate balance between heritage preservation and public safety in Sierra Leone.
