Alhassan Gbassay Kanu has officially declared his intention to contest for the All People’s Congress (APC) presidential flagbearer position ahead of Sierra Leone’s 2028 general elections. The announcement was made during a well-attended event at 115 Bai Bureh Road in Kissy, Freetown, which drew journalists, political observers, and citizens from across the country.
The declaration event marked the beginning of Kanu’s campaign to secure the APC leadership, as he outlined a vision focused on education, youth employment, infrastructure development, and the fight against drug abuse.
Kanu emphasized the urgent need for high-quality school programs, increased job opportunities for young people, and better road and electricity infrastructure as key to unlocking Sierra Leone’s economic potential.
“Good roads and reliable electricity are essential for economic growth and to combat social issues,” Kanu stated, as he presented his strategic plan to address some of the nation’s most pressing challenges.
His message resonated with many in attendance, particularly young people and professionals, who expressed optimism about a leadership hopeful with both strong educational credentials and a clear commitment to national development.
Kanu’s announcement comes at a critical time, as Sierra Leone continues to grapple with social and economic hardships, especially among its youth. His emphasis on education reform, job creation, and community engagement is aimed at rallying a broad base of support within the APC and beyond.
He stressed the importance of grassroots engagement and inclusive dialogue, signaling his intent to run a people-centered campaign that bridges divisions and brings diverse communities together.
” I believe in conversations that begin at the grassroots level. Real change starts with understanding the people’s struggles and working with them to find solutions,” he noted.
With the political landscape gradually taking shape ahead of the 2028 elections, Kanu’s candidacy signals a pivotal moment within the APC, potentially introducing new energy and reform-oriented leadership. His campaign is expected to focus on policy-driven solutions and a commitment to national progress, which he believes Sierra Leoneans are ready to embrace.
As momentum builds, Kanu hopes to position himself not only as a leading contender for the APC flagbearer role but also as a transformative figure ready to guide Sierra Leone into a new era of development.
