Alhaji Manika Kamara has been recognised for his unwavering dedication and contributions to Moyamba District, receiving a Certificate of Recognition from the people of Moyamba and MODCAR 94.9 FM. The honour was bestowed upon him during MODCAR’s 20th-anniversary celebration on Friday, February 28, 2025, where he served as the keynote speaker under the theme “Community Ownership of the Radio: Be Visible.”
Kamara’s recognition stems from his instrumental role in addressing one of MODCAR Radio’s most pressing challenges—electricity supply. In 2024, during an engagement in Moyamba organised by the Independent Radio Network (IRN) in collaboration with the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ), Kamara became aware of the station’s struggles to maintain consistent broadcasting due to electricity shortages.
Understanding the vital role of community radio in information dissemination, he engaged Africel Sierra Leone through Abdul Karim Sesay, a dedicated professional who assured him of the company’s willingness to intervene. Shortly after, the station received a much-needed boost.
“A few weeks later, I received a call from the station manager with the good news—MODCAR was now enjoying a 24-hour electricity supply,” Kamara stated.
Expressing gratitude for the recognition, he described it as a humbling experience and reaffirmed his commitment to supporting community media.
“It was a privilege to play a small role in ensuring that the people of Moyamba have consistent access to information through their community radio. I extend my sincere appreciation to Africel Sierra Leone, especially Abdul Karim Sesay, for responding to this need,” Kamara said.
He also commended the management and staff of MODCAR Radio for their dedication to informing and empowering their community.
“Your work is truly inspiring, and I look forward to continued collaboration in strengthening media access across Sierra Leone,” he concluded.
MODCAR 94.9 FM has been a pillar of community engagement in Moyamba for two decades, and Kamara’s intervention has reinforced the station’s ability to serve its audience without interruption.
