On Sunday, December 17, 2023, a cross-section of members from the Albinism Royal Foundation gathered across the country to give a befitting burial to their fellow member, Mary Sia Yarjah. Mary, the younger sister of the Foundation’s Secretary and Advocacy Officer, Ibrahim Yarjah, passed away on December 10, 2023, after a brief illness at the age of twenty.
The National Executive Director of the Albinism Royal Foundation, Pastor Sarah Ngaiwa, emphasized that the purpose of the solemn ceremony was to pay their last respects to Mary and dispel the widespread misconception that albinos never die but instead disappear.
Pastor Ngaiwa expressed the profound loss that Mary’s death represented not only for her family and the foundation but for the entire country. Mary, with aspirations of studying law, had already met the requirements and had twice attempted the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) before her untimely demise.
The pastor highlighted Mary’s intelligence, love, and caring attitude toward humanity, making her a memorable and cherished member of the foundation. At the funeral and communion service held at the Reformed Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church on Tejan Street in Koidu City, Reverend Mani N. Mordicco delivered a sermon, drawing inspiration from the books of Job and Saint John.
Rev. Mordicco assured mourners that life continues after death, citing scriptures that emphasize the importance of hearing and believing in Jesus Christ. He spoke about the resurrection of Jesus and emphasized that death serves as a reminder of God’s absolute power over life and creation.
The reverend stressed the importance of salvation, stating that denial of Jesus leads to a journey to hell, while acceptance leads to heaven. He encouraged those present not to be ashamed of their faith, emphasizing that Earth is not our permanent home, and believers are merely awaiting God’s call. Rev. Mordicco concluded by reminding the audience that death is not the end but rather the beginning of real life.
After the service, Mary Sia Yarjah was laid to rest on Fonjay Street in Koidu City, marking the end of a heartfelt ceremony that celebrated her life and remembered her contributions to the Albinism Royal Foundation.
