AHEAD OF COMMONWEALTH GAMES QUALIFIERS: SIERRA LEONE RUGBY UNION UNVEILS TEAM JERSEY

The Sierra Leone Rugby Union has on Tuesday 23rdNovember  2021 unveiled their team Jersey ahead of the Commonwealth games qualifiers that is set to kick start from 27th to the 28th November 2021.

The unveiling ceremony took place at the Africell American Corner at Bathurst Street in Freetown.

According to Mohamed Yassaneh, the head coach of the Sierra Leone Rugby Union the team has been in intensive training for the past two months in preparation for the Commonwealth Games qualifiers and the Rugby players are in high spirits to qualify for the Games to be held in Birmingham, England.

He affirmed that one key challenge they have been facing is funding because sometimes the Rugby players go through difficult training but for them to even get food to eat after the training is a challenge.

He added that this is not their first international tournament; they have been involved in several ones, in 2013 the Sierra Leone Rugby Union took part in the Junior Championships in England in Liverpool where they did extremely well in that event.

Dr. Patrick the President of the National Olympic Committee started by telling thanks to the athletes for their hard work in getting them prepared for the qualifiers, even though they are facing difficulty with finance but urged them to continue their hard work, in ensuring that they fly the green white and blue at the International Stage.

Alieu Sesay who represented the Ministry of Sports in collaboration with the National Sports Authority said the Government is fully committed to helping promote sports in the Country and he assured that there is always money to help other sporting disciplines, but football takes huge junk of the funding.

He urged the Sierra Leone Rugby Union to decentralize the sports in the Country so that other young who may fall in love with the sport will join them.

Rugby Africa will kick off the qualifying process for seven World Cup and Commonwealth Games at the Paa Joe Stadium in Kumasi Ghana from November 27th to 28th 2021.
