Key stakeholders gathered to discuss sustainable strategies aimed at protecting the nation from the adverse effects of climate change. In this context, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security participated in the event, showcasing its ongoing efforts to promote climate-resilient agriculture. These efforts include providing climate-smart technologies, extension services, drought-tolerant crop varieties, gender-friendly machinery, early warning systems, and policies designed to foster sustainable agricultural practices.
In his keynote address, the Vice President of Sierra Leone, Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh, commended farmers for their resilience in the face of climate challenges. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to environmental protection and the enforcement of policies aimed at safeguarding the nation’s resources. Furthermore, he emphasised the critical role of traditional leaders in driving local community engagement. According to Dr. Jalloh, their involvement is essential for implementing sustainable environmental practices that improve livelihoods and protect the environment.
Meanwhile, during the exhibition booth tour, the Vice President visited the Feed Salone booth, where the Acting Director of Extension Services, Alpha Yayah Mansaray, provided a detailed overview of the progress made under the Feed Salone initiative. He also outlined plans for the upcoming planting season, highlighting the various climate adaptation and mitigation measures being implemented to support farmers in the region.
Moreover, the National Federation of Farmers showcased agricultural products from across the country. This display demonstrated the ongoing resilience of farmers, whose efforts continue to contribute to national food security despite the numerous challenges posed by climate change.
The National Forest and Climate Forum was organised by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change in collaboration with other key stakeholders. The forum served as a significant platform for discussing climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies in Sierra Leone.
