In an emotional open letter addressed to the Sierra Leone Roads Authority (SLRA) and other relevant stakeholders, concerned citizens are calling for immediate safety interventions at Rokel Container Junction, following the tragic death of Isha Kamara, a young and promising nurse.
The letter, written by Ambassador Abdulai Dauda Samura on July 1, 2025, underscores the urgency of installing a speed bump at the junction, which has become increasingly dangerous due to reckless driving and over-speeding.
Isha Kamara was fatally struck by a speeding vehicle while crossing the road after her nursing class. According to eyewitnesses, the vehicle en route to the Peninsula dragged her several meters, causing severe injuries including multiple broken bones. She succumbed to the trauma shortly afterward.
“Her dreams and aspirations were cut short due to poor road infrastructure,” Ambassador Samura lamented, highlighting the devastating emotional impact on her family, friends, and the entire Kondoloh Community, where she was known as a tall, fair, and quiet individual deeply loved by all.
Rokel Container Junction has become a notorious accident hotspot. The absence of traffic-calming infrastructure such as speed bumps or pedestrian crossings has turned it into a deadly zone, especially for residents and students who cross the road daily.
Tragically, Isha’s death is not an isolated incident. Since January 2025, the community has recorded five road fatalities at this junction alone deaths that many believe could have been prevented through basic safety measures.
“Every life matters, and no more should be lost when a simple intervention could make such a significant difference,” the letter pleads.
Community members are urging the SLRA and relevant local authorities to respond swiftly by installing a speed bump and other safety infrastructure to prevent further tragedies. Their appeal is not just a demand for action it is a call to protect lives.
As the residents await a response, the memory of Isha Kamara stands as a painful but powerful reminder of the price of inaction. Her story fuels a growing movement that insists road safety must be a national priority, beginning with local changes that save lives.
