On  February 28, 2025, the Government of Sierra Leone through the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources announced the resumption of artisanal fishing in the country.

This decision follows a one-month closed season aimed at conserving fish stocks and protecting marine ecosystems.

In a press release issued on Friday, the ministry explained that the closure was necessary to allow fish populations to replenish, ensuring sustainable fishing practices for the long-term benefit of the country’s fisheries and aquaculture sectors. The initiative aligns with the provisions of the Fisheries and Aquaculture Act of 2018, which mandates seasonal closures to safeguard marine resources.

In the public notice, Princess Dugba, the Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, emphasised the importance of this temporary measure in maintaining the health of fish stocks. “The closed season was crucial to prevent overfishing and to allow our marine environment to recover,” he stated. “By resuming artisanal fishing, we hope to balance the needs of local communities with the imperative of sustainability.”

Artisanal fishing is a vital source of livelihood for many communities along Sierra Leone’s coast. The ministry urged fishermen and stakeholders to engage in responsible fishing practices to ensure that fish populations remain viable for future generations.

The resumption comes as a relief for many who depend on this activity for their economic well-being.

The announcement also serves as a reminder of the government’s commitment to sustainable fisheries management. The Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources assured to continue monitoring fish stocks and enforcing regulations to prevent illegal fishing practices.

As artisanal fishing resumes, the ministry calls on all fishing communities to adhere to established guidelines and work collaboratively to protect the nation’s marine resources.

The hope is that through responsible practices, both the fishing industry and the environment can thrive in harmony.
