Sierra Leone’s senior national team has on 24th March 2022 lost its first match after competing in the just concluded Africa Cup of Nation (AFCON) to Togo in a FIFA sanction international friendly encounter at the Marian Stadium in Turkey.
Leone Stars started the first half with an impressive play enjoying the bulk of the ball possession but as always they were not clinical in front of goal that causes them a miserable defeat in the second half by three goals to nil.
Leone Stars went into this match with the mindset of turning around their poor performance at the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon, but the host were well discipline and composed as they put the visitors in a turf contest.
Togo three goals came in the second half and they took advantage of their experience from the World Cup qualifiers which has help them triumph over Leone Stars of Sierra Leone.
Togo is ranked below Sierra Leone at 126th position while the visitors are ranked 107th in the world.
For the records, Togo has defeated Sierra Leone (6) times in all competitions and Sierra Leone have only managed to get one win against Togo. Leone Stars last defeat was in 2007 during the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers match.
According to John Keister, the head coach of the national team and his technical team has decided to bring new faces to the friendly matches to test their strength before going into the next qualifiers in the Africa Cup of nations that will commence in June.
He affirmed that the national team is through a transition period that’s why they have decided to introduce new faces as he prepare to test the squad before going to qualifiers in June. He said the team is going to focus on winning their friendlies matches because that will give them a better strength going forward in the other matches without a defeat in all competitions.
Leone Stars will now face the Leon Stars of Liberia on the 27th March 2022 in a trial B match at the same venue and on the 29th of March they will face Congo Brazzaville.
