President Dr. Julius Maada Bio arrived in Ethiopia to participate in the 38th African Union (AU) Summit and the 29th General Assembly of the Organisation of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD) on February 15, 2025.

The high-level meetings, held at the African Union Commission, bring together heads of state and governments to deliberate on pressing continental issues, focusing on unity, development, and strategic policymaking. The summit provides a crucial platform for African leaders to explore solutions to the continent’s challenges while seizing opportunities for sustainable progress.

A key highlight of the gathering is the OAFLAD General Assembly, themed “Building on Beijing: First Ladies Championing Women’s Leadership and Rights Through African Heritage.” First Lady Fatima Bio, alongside her counterparts, advocated for stronger gender equality initiatives and the empowerment of women across Africa. The theme underscores the role of African heritage in fostering inclusive leadership and advancing women’s rights.

“We must work tirelessly to ensure that women are empowered and represented at all levels of decision-making. Our heritage is a source of strength that can guide us in this journey,” Mrs. Bio emphasised in her address.

As deliberations continue, President Bio is set to participate in pivotal discussions on continental development, while First Lady Bio engages in initiatives aimed at strengthening women’s leadership. Their participation underscores Sierra Leone’s commitment to Africa’s collective growth and the advancement of gender equity across the continent.
