The Academic Staff Association (ASA) of Njala University on Wednesday, 3rd September 2025, officially inaugurated its newly elected executive in a ceremony held at the university’s Great Hall in Towama. The swearing-in, presided over by Chief Electoral Commissioner Mr. Jonathan Sahr Kpakima, marked a new chapter in the association’s drive for staff welfare and institutional development.

In his inaugural address, ASA President Mr. Aiah James Sandy expressed gratitude to members for the  confidence reposed in his leadership. He described his election as both challenging and divinely guided, stressing that leadership is a mission of service.

“Campaigns are over; now begins the mission. We are here to rebuild ASA, and with God’s help, we will deliver on our promises,” he assured.

Mr. Sandy highlighted the urgent need to address salary arrears, noting that some staff had gone unpaid for nearly a year. He pledged that by the end of September, his executive would engage the appropriate authorities to ensure payment. He also reaffirmed his commitment to pushing for improved service conditions, including salary increments and end-of-service benefits.

Calling for unity, the new president extended an olive branch to his former opponent, Mr. Tommy Mathew Hanson, and his supporters. “There is no Sandy ASA and no Hanson ASA there is only one ASA of Njala University. Elections are over; now let us act as one body,” he appealed.

Delivering a goodwill message, Professor Juana Paul Moiwo commended the electoral process, which saw the new executive win with 85% of the vote against 15% for the opposition. He urged the leadership to remain consultative and constructive in engagements with the university administration. “We have placed our trust in you; do not let us down,” he cautioned.

Mr. Kpakima, who oversaw the polls and swore in the new executive, praised the peaceful and transparent conduct of the election. He described it as a reflection of ASA’s maturity and urged the leadership to uphold democratic values in governance.

Also speaking, Dr. Mohamed Blango congratulated the new team and reminded them that their legacy, not their titles, would define their tenure. “What will you be remembered for when you leave office? Let that question guide your service,” he advised.

The ceremony concluded with a renewed pledge from the new executive to pursue unity, accountability, and the welfare of academic staff across all campuses of Njala University.
