In a joint operation conducted by Guinean authorities and Sierra Leone’s security apparatus, Abubakar Boxx Konteh, a suspect allegedly linked to the failed coup attempt on November 26, 2023, has been apprehended in Guinea. The Sierra Leone Government Ministry of Information and Civic Education made this announcement through a public notice dated March 25, 2024.
Reportedly, Mr. Konteh was captured at the Guinea airport on March 23, 2024, while attempting to flee to Senegal after being in hiding within Guinea. The Ministry stated that Mr. Konteh is suspected of providing material support in the planning, execution, and subsequent escape/hiding of individuals involved in the failed coup.
Additionally, Mr. Konteh is accused of involvement in the illegal trade of substances, including the potent drug Kush, within Sierra Leone. The Ministry emphasized its commitment to extradite Mr. Konteh to Sierra Leone for further interrogation by the Sierra Leone Police.
Expressing gratitude for the collaborative efforts between the Republic of Sierra Leone and Guinea in safeguarding border security, the Sierra Leonean Government thanked Guinean authorities for their continuous cooperation. This operation highlights the importance of bilateral cooperation in maintaining regional security and stability.
The Ministry of Information and Civic Education urged the public to remain vigilant and continue to provide any pertinent information to assist the Sierra Leone Police in their efforts to ensure the safety and security of the nation.
The apprehension of Abubakar Boxx Konteh signifies a significant development in the investigation into the November 26 coup attempt and underscores the commitment of both Sierra Leone and Guinea to combat threats to their national security.
