Member of Parliament representing the Western Area Urban District, Hon. Mamoud Kamara, has raised concerns over poor internet connectivity, high data costs and unreliable telecommunications services in Sierra Leone, calling for stronger regulation and improved service delivery by telecommunications companies.

Hon. Kamara made the remarks on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, while contributing to the debate on President Julius Maada Bio’s State Opening Address in the Chamber of Parliament.

While welcoming the President’s declaration of 2026 as the Year of Action and Accelerated Delivery, the MP stressed that government performance should be measured by tangible improvements in the lives of ordinary citizens rather than economic statistics alone.

He questioned whether the reported 4.4 per cent decline in inflation and relative stability of the exchange rate had translated into better living conditions for citizens, particularly households struggling with the rising costs of food, transportation and other basic necessities.

Addressing the telecommunications sector, Hon. Kamara described internet access as essential to education, business, communication and national development. However, he expressed dissatisfaction with the high cost of mobile data, poor network coverage and unreliable services provided by telecommunications operators.

He cited instances in which subscribers struggle to download even a single photograph despite purchasing data bundles. He also highlighted complaints about difficulties receiving incoming calls despite mobile phones being switched on.

Against this backdrop, he called on the Ministry responsible for telecommunications, the National Communications Authority and Parliament’s Committee on Communications to strengthen regulatory oversight and ensure that telecommunications companies deliver affordable, reliable and quality services.

He emphasised that consumers deserve value for their money and should not continue paying for services that fall below acceptable standards.

On development financing, Hon. Kamara acknowledged the reported US$374.9 million in agreements with development partners, describing the commitments as an opportunity to accelerate national development. He, however, urged the government to ensure that the funds are channelled into practical projects that deliver meaningful benefits to citizens.

He concluded by underscoring the importance of accountability, effective service delivery and measurable development outcomes, noting that the success of the President’s Year of Action should ultimately be judged by the improvements it brings to the everyday lives of Sierra Leoneans.
