Chinese President Xi Jinping has held talks with Botswana’s President Duma Gideon Boko in Beijing, China, on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, with both leaders announcing the elevation of bilateral relations to a comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership.
During the talks at the Great Hall of the People, President Xi called for stronger cooperation between the two countries in trade, the digital economy, agriculture and education. He also urged Botswana to take full advantage of China’s zero-tariff treatment for African countries that maintain diplomatic relations with Beijing.
On mining cooperation, Xi presented a four-point proposal emphasising African ownership of natural resources, mutual benefit, high-quality development, and a fair and open business environment.
President Boko reaffirmed Botswana’s commitment to the one-China principle and welcomed increased Chinese investment and cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative.
The talks followed an official welcome ceremony for President Boko earlier in the day. The ceremony featured a 21-gun salute at Tiananmen Square and a military band playing the national anthems of both countries.
The elevation of relations is expected to provide a framework for strengthening cooperation between China and Botswana across key economic and development sectors.
