The Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) has welcomed the Chief Justice’s approval for the live broadcast of the Supreme Court hearing on constitutional matters scheduled for Wednesday, October 7, 2026.

SLAJ said the approval follows a formal request it made to the Judiciary on September 21, 2026, urging that the proceedings be broadcast live in the public interest, given the national significance of the constitutional matters before the Court.

The Association confirmed the approval in a press release issued on Monday, October 5, 2026.

SLAJ described the decision as a victory for democracy, accountability and the public’s right to know.

“The Judiciary has approved the live coverage subject to conditions intended to preserve the dignity, decorum and integrity of the Court,” the statement said.

Under the approved arrangement, 10 media houses will be accredited to cover the proceedings from inside the courtroom. SLAJ will liaise with the Sierra Leone Court Reporters Association (SLCRA) and the Judiciary’s Communications and Public Affairs Unit to coordinate the coverage in an orderly and professional manner.

Journalists, who are not among the accredited media houses, as well as members of the public, will be able to follow the proceedings through major television networks from their offices and homes.

SLAJ also announced that, following a special appeal to the Judiciary, the Independent Radio Network (IRN) has been approved to broadcast the proceedings live through its network of more than 40 radio stations across the country.

The arrangement will allow citizens across Sierra Leone, including those in remote parts of the country, to follow the constitutional hearing in real time.

However, the Judiciary has issued guidelines for the coverage. It has directed that no commentary, analysis or other statements concerning the merits or demerits of the matter should be made while the case remains sub judice.

Still photography will also not be permitted inside the courtroom during the proceedings.

SLAJ has called on participating media houses and journalists to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, accuracy, impartiality and responsibility while respecting the authority, dignity and decorum of the Court.

The approval has been described as a significant development for judicial transparency and public access to court proceedings, particularly given the national interest surrounding the constitutional matter.

SLAJ reaffirmed its commitment to defending press freedom while promoting responsible journalism that contributes to peace, accountability and national cohesion.
