The transformation of the Milton Margai College of Education and Technology (MMCET) into a technical university has led to the building on the capacity of the lecturers in Information Technology as the college has secured analogical equipment’s worth over a million USD.
Through the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, the college has secured a whopping sum of about $ 18 Million for the transformation of the three campuses. According to the acting Principal, Dr. Philip John Kanu, they have upgraded the labs with sophisticated equipment’s to train students. He said the Egyptian Embassy has donated some equipment’s and promised to bring an expert to install the equipment and train some Sierra Leoneans to operate them.
“Based on the reforms taking place in the college, we need more space for expansion especially at the Congo Cross campus where people have encroached”, Dr. Kanu asserted, adding that they have been getting partners and funding but only limited to the Godrich campus which has available spaces.
Research has proven that the country has less than two thousand engineers, and to improve on this the country needs about 15,000 engineers in the country. With the transformation of the college, it is believed that the middle level power with be boasted and help create more jobs for Sierra Leoneans.
It could be recalled that Parliament smoothly passed the bill to transform the college into a university status with empowered technical courses. Meanwhile, the bill awaits the President’s signature for the name of the college to be change.
