Betts Insurance Company (BIC) has been officially launched in Freetown, with the company pledging to use technology and innovation to transform Sierra Leone’s insurance industry.
The launch ceremony was held on Friday, September 18, 2026, at the Lagoonda Entertainment Complex in Aberdeen, Freetown.
Chairman of the Board of BIC, Claudius Bert-Williams, described the company as an independent insurance provider with strong oversight and key governance structures, noting that good governance remains fundamental to its operations.
BIC offers a range of insurance products covering individuals, homes, motor vehicles, businesses and personal accidents. The company also provides insurance for goods imported into Sierra Leone, in line with the requirement that imports be insured locally.
According to the company, customers can submit claims using photographs, track the progress of their claims and receive payouts directly into their TBI wallets. Policies are issued once payment is confirmed.
Customers can make payments through Orange Money, Africell Money and bank transfers, while claims are also paid directly into customers’ wallets.
Speaking at the launch, Chief Executive Officer of BIC, Alfred Akibo Betts, said the company aims to do things differently by creating a lasting impact and legacy in Sierra Leone and beyond.
He said BIC would seek to take insurance to the next level by leveraging technology, adding that potential customers can obtain insurance coverage within three minutes.
Mr. Betts further assured that the company would base its decisions on merit rather than personality and would strive to represent Sierra Leone positively.
He said BIC would learn from the mistakes of other businesses and recognized that every business starts small and that every new chapter has a beginning.
According to him, technology has become the norm across sectors, making it important for businesses to embrace digital solutions to improve service delivery.
He also commended the Sierra Leone Insurance Commission (SLICO) for the confidence it has placed in BIC.
Commissioner of SLICO, Arthur Yaskey, described the launch as a testament to innovation and commitment within the insurance sector.
He assured that SLICO would continue to ensure that the industry operates with integrity while contributing to the development of a stronger insurance market and creating employment opportunities for young people.
Mr. Yaskey noted that insurance is more than a financial product, as it provides security and peace of mind while playing an important role in Sierra Leone’s economic stability.
He said SLICO would continue to provide oversight, supervision and a conducive environment for the insurance industry to thrive.
The Commissioner also appealed to players in the sector to collaborate and share business opportunities, stressing that collective efforts could help build a stronger industry capable of contributing significantly to national development.
He wished BIC success in its operations.
Highlights of the launch included a video presentation titled “In Conversation with the CEO: The Betts Group Journey,” a musical interlude, a video presentation titled “Our People, Our Journey,” and a networking reception.
The well-attended event brought together several dignitaries, including the Minister of Trade and Industry, as well as executives from banks and insurance companies.
Mrs. Binta Akibo Betts served as Master of Ceremonies, while Ms. Fatmata Binta Bah of BIC delivered the vote of thanks.
