Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has urged Iran and the United States to rebuild their negotiation mechanism based on the consensus reached so far and resumes substantive consultations on issues of mutual concern.
Wang made the call during discussions with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, stressing China’s support for dialogue as a means of addressing tensions in the Middle East.
He said China also supports Iran’s engagement with Gulf States, urging countries in the region to respect each other’s territorial sovereignty and national security while safeguarding shared regional interests through constructive dialogue.
Wang further called on all parties to take effective measures to reopen the Strait of Hormuz as soon as possible, ensure the safe and smooth operation of international shipping routes, and maintain stability in global energy transportation, industrial production and supply chains.
“We do not wish to see regional tensions spill over further into Yemen and the Red Sea,” Wang said, calling on all parties to avoid actions that could further complicate the situation and instead resolve outstanding issues through dialogue and negotiation.
The Chinese foreign minister said recent developments had again demonstrated that the existing security architecture in the Middle East was inadequate, calling for its reform and reinforcement.
Wang recalled that during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Egypt, Xi presented a four-point proposal for building a new security architecture in the Middle East based on common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable security.
He said China welcomes constructive efforts by regional countries to explore new approaches to strengthening peace and security.
“On Middle East issues, China, as a responsible major country, will as always contribute to peace and stability, promote peace talks, and uphold fairness and justice,” Wang said.
Wang also reaffirmed China’s consistent policy toward Iran, saying Beijing upholds justice, opposes the use of force and supports international norms and the principles governing international relations under the United Nations Security Council and other multilateral platforms.
He added that China is ready to strengthen communication and coordination with Iran to achieve further progress in bilateral relations.
For his part, Araghchi said Iran was ready to engage in dialogue and consultations with regional countries, establish good-neighborly and friendly relations, and work toward the early restoration of peace and stability in the region.
He said Iran welcomes and supports President Xi’s four-point proposal and is prepared to work with China to strengthen cooperation, while expecting Beijing to play a greater role in promoting regional peace and stability.
Araghchi also said Iran attaches great importance to its relations with China and is ready to maintain mutual support, strengthen exchanges at all levels, deepen practical cooperation, jointly address challenges and promote the sustained development of bilateral ties.
