President Julius Maada Bio has reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening collaboration with Paramount Chiefs as a means of promoting effective governance, peace, security, and community development across Sierra Leone.

The President made the commitment during a consultation with Paramount Chiefs in Bo, where he described traditional leaders as a critical bridge between government and citizens at the grassroots level.

“Paramount Chiefs form the backbone of effective governance. They maintain a vital connection to their communities,” President Bio said. “We are committed to strengthening governance, security, and trust through our collaboration at the chiefdom level.”

He explained that the engagement was part of efforts to deepen cooperation with traditional authorities and ensure that government policies and development initiatives respond to the needs of communities across the country.

“As a son of a Paramount Chief, today’s consultation with our esteemed Paramount Chiefs in Bo reaffirms our resolve to work with these leaders to enhance security, promote peace, and achieve impactful outcomes,” President Bio stated.

The meeting in Bo forms part of broader engagements aimed at strengthening coordination between the central government and traditional leadership across Sierra Leone’s 190 chiefdoms.

Paramount Chiefs play a significant role in Sierra Leone’s governance structure. They serve as custodians of local customs, land, and community order, while also presiding over chiefdom courts, resolving disputes, and mobilizing communities for development and security initiatives.

The institution of chieftaincy has remained an important part of Sierra Leone’s governance system since before independence. In many rural communities, decisions relating to land management, local justice, and community development are often guided by traditional authorities, making Paramount Chiefs key partners in maintaining stability and delivering public services.

President Bio’s emphasis on his connection to traditional leadership reflects the importance placed on maintaining strong relations between the state and the House of Chiefs. Successive governments have engaged Paramount Chiefs in areas such as peacebuilding, public health campaigns, community mobilization, and national development programmes due to their influence and trust within their communities.

At a time when issues relating to security, youth development, and social stability remain national priorities, the renewed partnership with Paramount Chiefs is expected to strengthen the implementation of government programmes at the community level.
