China expresses mourning for lives lost and sympathies to the bereaved families and the injured in the earthquake that recently hit Japan’s Kumamoto Prefecture, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson said on Wednesday.

Spokesperson Mao Ning made the remarks at a daily press briefing in response to a related query.

She said China’s embassy and consulates in Japan activated emergency response mechanisms immediately after the earthquake and issued a consular advisory urging Chinese nationals to guard against potential tsunamis and aftershocks.

Mao added that the Foreign Ministry and Chinese diplomatic missions in Japan will continue to closely monitor the situation and provide timely assistance to Chinese citizens in need.

The magnitude-7.1 quake struck Kumamoto at 4:27 p.m. on Tuesday at a depth of about 10 km, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.
