La Roja defeated Argentina 2-1 in a dramatic final to win the 2026 FIFA World Cup, ending Lionel Messi’s last dance in football’s biggest game with heartbreak, while 19-year-old Lamine Yamal announced himself as the new face of global football.
In front of 82,000 fans, Spain took control early. Yamal, playing like a veteran at just 19, opened the scoring in the 34th minute with a curling left-footed strike after cutting inside from the right. It was his 4th goal of the tournament.
Argentina responded through spirit and Messi. The 39-year-old captain pulled Argentina level in the 67th minute with a trademark free-kick, sparking wild scenes. But Spain had the final word. Substitute Mikel Oyarzabal tapped in a Yamal cross in the 88th minute to seal it.
The final whistle brought two very different pictures: Spanish players collapsing in joy, and Messi on his knees in tears. It was the Argentina legend’s 5th and final World Cup. He walked off applauded by both sets of fans.

At 19 years and 42 days, Lamine Yamal became the youngest player to both score and assist in a World Cup final. He finished the tournament with 4 goals and 5 assists and was untouchable on the right wing all month.

For Spain, it’s their 2nd World Cup title after 2010. For Argentina and Messi, it ends in sadness one final short. Messi addressed fans after: “I gave everything. I’m proud of this team.”
The World Cup now heads for a new generation. And that generation is already here wearing No.19 and holding the trophy.
