The Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, in collaboration with the Ministry of Sports, has launched the Community Beach Sports Tourism Initiative, a programme designed to promote sporting excellence, environmental sustainability, tourism development, and national cohesion.
The initiative was presented during a meeting held at the Ministry of Sports Conference Room, where the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs unveiled its proposal to the Ministry of Sports and the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA).
Presenting the initiative, the Minister of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, Mrs. Nabeela Farida Tunis, described sports tourism as a rapidly growing niche with immense potential for Sierra Leone. She noted that beach football and beach volleyball could serve as powerful drivers of tourism, community empowerment, and destination development.
Minister Tunis said the initiative is also intended to address the growing challenge of waste management, particularly along Sierra Leone’s coastline. She explained that the programme would integrate beach sporting activities with environmental stewardship by encouraging regular beach clean-up campaigns and promoting cleaner, safer, and more sustainable coastal communities.
She said the long-term vision is to position Sierra Leone as West Africa’s leading destination for community beach football and beach volleyball competitions while showcasing the country’s scenic coastline as a premier tourism attraction.
According to the Minister, pilot competitions could be staged during major national events, including the One Nation Reggae Festival scheduled for 25–30 November and the Gastronomy and Tourism Week from 1–4 December. She added that the Government aims to expand the initiative into an internationally recognised sporting event within the next three to four years.
President of the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA), Babadi Kamara, welcomed the proposal and described it as both timely and innovative. He pledged the Association’s full support for the initiative and assured stakeholders that the SLFA would review the proposal and provide the necessary technical expertise to ensure its successful implementation.
Kamara further commended Minister Tunis for introducing an initiative that not only promotes sports tourism but also contributes to improved coastal waste management and environmental sustainability.
Minister of Sports, Augusta James-Teima, also expressed strong support for the initiative, describing it as an innovative response to the environmental challenges facing Sierra Leone’s beaches.
She reaffirmed her Ministry’s commitment to working closely with the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs and other stakeholders to ensure the successful implementation of the Community Beach Sports Tourism Initiative.
The initiative is expected to strengthen sports tourism, encourage environmental conservation, create opportunities for community participation, and enhance Sierra Leone’s reputation as an emerging destination for beach sports and eco-tourism in West Africa.
