France have booked their place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Sweden in a fiercely contested Round of 32 encounter, keeping alive their hopes of retaining football’s biggest prize.

Les Bleus showed the quality and composure expected of reigning world champions, overcoming a determined Swedish side that refused to make the contest easy. France dominated possession for much of the match but had to remain patient against Sweden’s disciplined defensive setup.

The breakthrough eventually came through Kylian Mbappé, who once again demonstrated his world-class ability by finding the back of the net to put France ahead. Sweden responded with renewed urgency and created several promising opportunities, but the French defence, marshalled by captain Ibrahima Konaté, stood firm to preserve the lead.

France added a second goal late in the match to put the result beyond doubt, sealing a deserved victory and confirming their progression to the next round of the competition.

The victory extends France’s impressive knockout-stage record and reinforces their status as one of the favourites to lift the World Cup trophy once again. Head coach Didier Deschamps praised his team’s maturity and resilience, noting that experience has become a vital asset as the tournament enters its decisive stages.

For Sweden, the defeat brings an end to a spirited World Cup campaign in which they battled bravely against one of the strongest teams in international football. Despite the disappointment, the Swedes leave the tournament with their heads held high after a series of committed performances.

France will now shift their focus to the Round of 16, where they will continue their quest to become the first nation since Brazil in 1962 to successfully defend the FIFA World Cup title.
