The Sierra Leone Ports and Harbours Authority (SLPHA) has reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable development, infrastructure modernization, and engineering excellence, highlighting the critical role of engineering in driving the nation’s economic transformation.
Speaking at the Biennial Conference of the Sierra Leone Institution of Engineers (SLIE), held at the Radisson Blu Mammy Yoko Hotel on 17 June 2026, SLPHA Company Secretary, Martin Maada George, emphasized the importance of engineering innovation in unlocking Sierra Leone’s development potential.
The conference, held under the theme “Engineering the Sierra Leone We Desire: A Sustainable Approach,” brought together engineering professionals, policymakers, and development stakeholders to discuss sustainable solutions to the country’s development challenges.
In his address, Mr. George noted that while Sierra Leone is richly endowed with natural resources, transforming these resources into lasting prosperity requires engineering expertise, innovation, and sustainable management practices. He stressed the need for climate-resilient infrastructure, renewable energy solutions, and environmentally responsible development initiatives to ensure long-term economic growth and improved living standards for future generations.
Highlighting the strategic importance of the Port of Freetown to national development, Mr. George disclosed that the port is currently undergoing significant modernization aimed at enhancing operational efficiency, increasing cargo-handling capacity, strengthening security systems, and reducing vessel turnaround times.
He further revealed that rehabilitation works on Berths 3, 4, 5, and 6 are actively progressing, with local engineering and consultancy firms playing key roles in the implementation of the project. According to him, these improvements are expected to boost the port’s competitiveness and support Sierra Leone’s growing trade and investment ambitions.
Mr. George also reaffirmed SLPHA’s commitment to education, innovation, and capacity building. He stated that the Authority will continue to provide internship and training opportunities for engineering students, helping to develop local expertise and nurture the next generation of engineering professionals.
Concluding his remarks, he reiterated SLPHA’s dedication to supporting national infrastructure development, advancing maritime modernization, and promoting sustainable economic growth across Sierra Leone.
The conference served as an important platform for dialogue on how engineering can contribute to building a more resilient, prosperous, and sustainable Sierra Leone.
