Sierra Leone’s President, Julius Maada Bio, has called on young African leaders to take charge of the continent’s transformation, emphasizing that their leadership will be crucial in positioning Africa as a global powerhouse in an era of rapid disruption.

Delivering the keynote address at this year’s Oxford Africa Conference, themed “Anchoring Africa: Grounded Leadership in the Age of Disruption,” President Bio said the moment demands visionary and grounded leadership capable of transforming Africa’s demographic and natural resource advantages into meaningful development.

Addressing an audience of students, academics, policymakers, and emerging leaders, President Bio described Africa’s rapidly growing youth population as the continent’s greatest asset. He stressed that the challenge lies in channeling that energy into innovation, effective governance, and entrepreneurship that can compete globally.

“As youthful leaders, you have the incredible opportunity to carry the wisdom gained from Oxford back to Africa and make a profound impact,” he said.

President Bio further noted that modern leadership requires more than technical expertise. According to him, effective leaders must be adaptable, attentive, and capable of building resilient institutions that can withstand economic, political, and technological shocks.

He also emphasized the importance of investing in education, digital infrastructure, and entrepreneurship, warning that Africa could miss critical opportunities created by global shifts in supply chains, energy, and technology if these sectors are neglected.

The Oxford Africa Conference annually brings together leaders, scholars, professionals, and members of the African diaspora to discuss Africa’s role in global affairs. This year’s conference focused on how leaders can remain rooted in African realities while responding effectively to rapid global changes.

In his closing remarks, President Bio urged delegates to move beyond discussions and commit themselves to practical action within their respective countries. He stressed that Africa’s future depends on leaders who are prepared to take responsibility now rather than wait for change to come from external forces.

His address received strong applause from attendees, many of whom are actively engaged in policy, business, and civil society initiatives across the African continent.
