Sierra Leone’s President, Julius Maada Bio, has reaffirmed the country’s commitment to energy transformation, highlighting West Africa’s progress in establishing itself as an integrated and investable economic zone.

Speaking at the International Vienna Climate and Energy Conference, President Bio who currently chairs the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) praised the ambition behind the Vienna Call to Action and emphasized the importance of regional collaboration in addressing energy and climate challenges.

President Bio outlined Sierra Leone’s proactive approach to energy development, focusing on power generation, transmission, last-mile connectivity, and off-grid solutions. He noted that the country aims to achieve 50% off-grid access by 2030, ensuring equitable energy access for all communities.

In his capacity as ECOWAS Chair, he highlighted ongoing reforms across the region, positioning West Africa as an attractive destination for investment. Sierra Leone’s efforts form part of a broader regional push for sustainable energy and climate resilience, aligned with the ECOWAS Vision 2050.

The Vienna conference provided a platform for President Bio to showcase Sierra Leone’s commitment to renewable energy and climate action. The country’s Energy Transition and Green Growth Plan targets 100% electrification by 2040, supported by significant investments in renewable energy and energy efficiency.

In addition, President Bio’s participation underscores Sierra Leone’s leadership in regional energy initiatives and its continued dedication to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
