Sierra Leone’s healthcare system received a major boost on 7 April 2026, as the Minister of Health, Dr. Austin Demby, commissioned seven Toyota 4×4 vehicles for medical superintendents across the country.

The vehicles are intended to enhance mobility and logistics, enabling hospitals to transport medical equipment, supplies, and personnel more efficiently. According to Minister Demby, the initiative will improve oversight, staff transportation, and healthcare delivery at the recipient hospitals.

The seven hospitals that received vehicles are Koidu Government Hospital, Makeni Government Hospital, Ola During Hospital, College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences (COMAHS), Connaught Hospital, Bo Government Hospital and Kono Town Hospital.

This initiative forms part of the government’s broader strategy to upgrade healthcare infrastructure and ensure all citizens have access to efficient medical services. The vehicles will be monitored via GPS, and the public has been encouraged to report any misuse to hospital authorities.

The commissioning follows President Julius Maada Bio’s recent healthcare interventions, including the delivery of 10 buses for nurses across five districts, additional SUVs for medical superintendents, and motorbikes to support healthcare operations. These upgrades aim to improve mobility for health personnel, enhance supervision, and strengthen outreach services, particularly in remote and underserved areas.

President Bio stated, “We are steadily building a robust infrastructure to empower our healthcare workers and deliver top-quality care to all Sierra Leoneans.”

Medical superintendents expressed gratitude for the vehicles, highlighting their role in improving oversight, staff transportation, and logistics. The deployment is also aligned with the government’s “300 Days of Activism” initiative, which focuses on reducing maternal and child mortality rates.

The Ministry of Health has emphasized collaboration with the College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences to strengthen healthcare delivery and ensure sustainable improvements. Routine maintenance will be conducted to keep the vehicles in optimal condition.

These investments, including the installation of a CT scan, ultrasound equipment, and a modern burns unit at Connaught Hospital, underscore the government’s commitment to transforming the healthcare sector and achieving universal health coverage. With these new vehicles and infrastructure upgrades, Sierra Leone is positioned to make significant strides in improving healthcare outcomes and delivering quality care to all citizens.
