SLTA Launches 2026 National Tennis Championship in Freetown

The Sierra Leone Tennis Association, in collaboration with Marampa Mines Limited, on March 30, officially launched its 2026 National Championship at the Hill Station Tennis Club.

The championship, scheduled to run from April 30 to May 11, will be staged across three venues Hill Station Tennis Club, LOR Tennis Club, and Juba Golf Club and is expected to attract players from various categories nationwide.

The launch ceremony drew key stakeholders, including representatives from the National Olympic Committee of Sierra Leone, the Ministry of Sports, Korlie Limited, and Qcell Sierra Leone.

In his address, SLTA President Andy Bam welcomed participants and partners, describing the championship as a celebration of tennis and an opportunity to further develop the sport.

“We are here to witness another year of tennis and celebration. I thank our sponsors and partners for their continued support,” he said.

Secretary General of the NOC/CGA-SLE, Ahmed Khanou, commended the association for consistently organising the championship, stressing that regular competitions are essential for the growth of the sport.

He reaffirmed the NOC’s commitment to supporting tennis through technical programmes, revealing that a proposal for a coaching course has already been submitted for consideration.

Also speaking, Managing Director of Korlie Limited, Cynthia Tsumake, highlighted her company’s commitment to youth development through sport, with a focus on nurturing young talents and promoting inclusivity.

“We are proud to support initiatives that empower young people and create opportunities in sport,” she noted.

Declaring the championship officially open, Director of Sports at the Ministry of Sports, Mustapha Haroun Korjie, praised the progress made by SLTA under Bam’s leadership, particularly in improving facilities and increasing player participation.

He assured the Ministry’s continued support towards the development of tennis in Sierra Leone.

The championship is expected to provide a platform for emerging talents while strengthening the growth and competitiveness of tennis nationwide.
