The Minister of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, Nabeela Farida Tunis led a high-level delegation to assess progress at key tourism development sites under the Sierra Leone Economic Diversification Project (SLEDP). The visit covered Bureh Beach, Leicester Peak, and Tacugama, and included officials from the Ministry, the SLEDP Project Coordination Unit (PCU), ICS, and contractors. The mission aimed to evaluate the readiness of facilities ahead of the project’s official closure.

The assessment began at Bureh Beach, where the delegation toured newly developed facilities guided by contractors. Officials expressed satisfaction with the quality and progress of work. Engagement with the local community highlighted the project’s positive impact, including discouraging sand mining, creating livelihood opportunities, and enhancing the beach’s appeal as a tourism destination.

At Leicester Peak, known for its panoramic views of Freetown, the team conducted a detailed inspection of ongoing work. While commending the contractors for the high standards achieved, the delegation emphasized the need to complete final touches promptly to ensure full operational readiness. The site is expected to boost eco-tourism and recreational activities in the capital.

The tour concluded at Tacugama, where Minister Tunis personally inspected the facilities alongside stakeholders. She praised the progress made and urged contractors to expedite completion within the stipulated timeframe.

Supported by the World Bank, the SLEDP initiative aims to diversify Sierra Leone’s economy through tourism by developing world-class infrastructure. The project is expected to enhance visitor experiences, create jobs, empower local communities, and position Sierra Leone as a competitive and sustainable tourism destination.
