The newly sworn-in Chief Electoral Commissioner and National Returning Officer of the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL), Edmond Sylvester Alpha, has pledged to restore and strengthen public confidence in the country’s electoral process through institutional reforms, constructive engagement, and an open-door policy on Thursday 19th March 2026.

In a letter dated 16 March 2026 that has been circulating on social media, the Commissioner extended an open invitation to the leadership of the opposition All People’s Congress (APC) and the Unity Parties to meet at a date and time of their choosing between 23 March and 10 April 2026.

The ECSL has sent similar letters to all registered political parties across the country, thanking them for their endorsements and requesting courtesy visits with their leadership within the same timeframe.

This initiative has been widely praised by members of the public, as it reflects the Commissioner’s commitment to fostering collaboration with key stakeholders and rebuilding trust in the electoral system. With his extensive experience as one of the longest-serving officials at the ECSL, Mr Alpha emphasized the importance of ensuring that the Commission operates with integrity, neutrality, and professionalism.

In the widely described “unprecedented” letter, the Chief Electoral Commissioner acknowledged the weight of responsibility placed upon him to serve all political stakeholders and the people of Sierra Leone. He assured recipients of his commitment to upholding fairness and professionalism in the Commission’s work.

“In line with my commitment to inclusive electoral management,” he stated, “I am embarking on a series of engagements with all registered political parties.” He added that the objective of these meetings is to outline his vision for the Commission, provide updates on its activities, and discuss its strategic roadmap toward the 2028 General Elections.

Alhaji Yeila Koroma, a 56-year-old father of seven, described the initiative as historic, noting that it demonstrates a clear focus on preparations for the 2028 General Elections. He added that such efforts would help reinforce transparency, fairness, credibility, integrity, and accountability within the Commission.

Similarly, Mabinty Tarawallie, a petty trader and mother of three, expressed optimism and high expectations that the APC and Unity Parties will accept the invitation. She emphasized the public’s hope for meaningful and productive dialogue that will benefit the nation and its citizens.

Since his appointment and swearing-in, Mr Alpha has continued to receive commendations from civil society organizations and rights groups. These endorsements, along with ongoing stakeholder engagements, are expected to strengthen institutional partnerships and support electoral reforms in Sierra Leone.
