The Ministry of Social Welfare of the Government of Sierra Leone has received a consignment of food items from the Chinese Embassy in Freetown to support Muslim communities during the holy month of Ramadan.
The donation includes 300 bags of 25kg rice, 30 bags of 50kg sugar, and 30 gallons of 10-litre cooking oil.
Speaking at the presentation, the Deputy Minister of Social Welfare, Alhaji Haji Kella, expressed appreciation to the Government and people of China for what he described as a timely and generous contribution. He noted that relations between Sierra Leone and China span over four decades and continue to strengthen through sustained cooperation.
Kella stated that the partnership has evolved into a strategic relationship grounded in mutual trust, adding that Sierra Leone has enhanced its diplomatic presence in key countries, including China and Saudi Arabia, to reinforce its international engagement.
He emphasized the Ministry’s commitment to collaborating with religious institutions, including the Inter-Religious Council of Sierra Leone and other faith-based organizations, to promote social cohesion. He also disclosed plans to expand engagement with partners, including potential exchange opportunities for religious leaders.
The Chinese Ambassador to Sierra Leone, Zhao Yong, said the donation reflects China’s continued support to Sierra Leone, particularly during Ramadan. He reaffirmed his government’s commitment to aiding through the Ministry of Social Welfare and strengthening bilateral cooperation.
Ambassador Zhao highlighted plans to deepen institutional collaboration through the International Cooperation Center, linking social work institutions in Sierra Leone with universities in China to facilitate academic and professional exchanges.
He also underscored human capital development as a priority, noting that Sierra Leone benefited from over 100 short-term training opportunities in China last year. He said efforts are underway to expand such opportunities, particularly for government officials.
The ambassador further pointed to ongoing development cooperation between the two countries, including projects in healthcare, education, agriculture, and infrastructure, aimed at supporting Sierra Leone’s socio-economic development.
The donation forms part of broader efforts by the Chinese Government to support vulnerable communities and strengthen ties with Sierra Leone.
