The Sierra Leone Association of Journalists has presented a plaque of appreciation to the Minister of Finance, Sheku Ahmed Fantamadi Bangura, in recognition of his support to the association and his role in stabilising the economy for sustainable growth.

The presentation was made during a courtesy visit to the Minister’s office on George Street in Freetown on Tuesday, March 17, 2026. The delegation included former SLAJ President Ahmed Sahid Nasralla, current President Alhaji Manika Kamara, and members of the association’s executive.

Introducing the current leadership, Nasralla thanked the Minister for taking time out of his busy schedule to meet with the delegation. He noted that SLAJ has maintained a strong working relationship with the Ministry of Finance over the years, particularly in ensuring the disbursement of the President’s annual subvention to the association.

He explained that the purpose of the visit was to formally introduce the new SLAJ President and his executive, and to seek continued support and cooperation similar to what was enjoyed during his tenure.

In his remarks, SLAJ President Alhaji Manika Kamara highlighted the importance of the government subvention in supporting the operations of SLAJ, its regional offices, and affiliated bodies such as Women in the Media, the Sierra Leone Reporters Union, and the Guild of Editors.

Kamara also announced plans for the 2026 SLAJ Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Awards to be held in Makeni. He proposed that the Ministry of Finance sponsor a “Best Economic Report Award” to promote excellence in economic journalism.

In response, Minister Bangura expressed appreciation for the recognition and commended journalists for their critical role in national development, particularly in reporting on key economic issues.

He outlined progress made by the government in stabilising major macroeconomic indicators, including inflation, interest rates, domestic revenue mobilisation, public debt, and expenditure control.

The Minister also noted that the government is closely monitoring developments in the Middle East and is putting measures in place to mitigate any potential impact on Sierra Leone.

He assured the SLAJ executive of continued collaboration, particularly in areas of information sharing, training, and capacity-building opportunities.
