Police at the Family Support Unit (FSU) of the Motema Police Divisional Headquarters in Nimikoro Chiefdom, Kono District, have investigated and charged a case of child cruelty involving a seven-year-old girl whose hands were allegedly burned by her aunt.

The suspect, Doris Bangura, has been charged and the matter has been sent to the Sefadu Magistrate Court for further legal proceedings.

In an interview with our correspondent, Inspector Francis Ganda, Line Manager of the Family Support Unit at the Motema Police Divisional Headquarters, said the incident occurred in the Susu Town area of Nimikoro Chiefdom.

According to Inspector Ganda, the suspect allegedly burned both the left and right hands of her seven-year-old niece, Hawa Koroma, after accusing the child of stealing two leones from her.

He further explained that investigations revealed that before carrying out the act, the suspect tied the child’s hands together, allegedly to ensure that both hands would burn.

Inspector Ganda described the incident as a serious case of child abuse, adding that the police took swift action following reports of the matter.

For medical treatment and protection, the victim Hawa Koroma has been taken to Freetown, where she is currently receiving care under the supervision of the child-focused protection organisation World Hope International.

Meanwhile, the suspect Doris Bangura has been remanded at the Female Correctional Centre in Kono District pending further court proceedings.

Police say the matter is now before the court as investigations continue.
