The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Alhaji Timothy Musa Kabba, has assured the public that diplomatic relations between Sierra Leone and Guinea remain strong and cordial despite the recent border incident in Falaba District.
Speaking at the Government’s weekly press conference hosted by the Ministry of Information and Civic Education, Minister Kabba emphasized that the longstanding relationship between the two neighbouring countries is rooted in deep historical, cultural, and economic ties.
He recalled that between 1967 and 1997, Guinea served as a haven for Sierra Leonean leaders during periods of political instability, underscoring the strong sense of solidarity shared between the two nations. He added that both countries continue to benefit from vibrant cross-border trade and close social connections, making any form of conflict unnecessary and counterproductive.
Regarding the arrest of 16 Sierra Leonean security personnel by Guinean forces following a border misunderstanding, Minister Kabba disclosed that a multifaceted diplomatic approach was employed to secure their release. He stated that sustained engagement and mutual respect between the two governments played a critical role in resolving the matter peacefully.
The Minister confirmed that the personnel were treated with dignity while in custody and were safely released through coordinated diplomatic efforts. He commended the leadership of Vice President Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh for overseeing the engagement process that led to the positive outcome.
Minister Kabba reaffirmed Sierra Leone’s commitment to peaceful coexistence, dialogue, and regional cooperation, stressing that the Government will continue to strengthen bilateral relations with Guinea in the interest of stability and development.
