The Embassy of Sierra Leone in Switzerland, represented by Ambassador Gberie, has participated in a high-level working retreat organized by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in collaboration with Switzerland’s Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA).

The retreat focused on the development of a political declaration aimed at reinforcing International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and promoting the protection of civilians and humanitarian principles during armed conflicts.

The event brought together co-chairing states and technical experts, demonstrating a shared commitment to addressing the growing challenges posed by modern warfare. During the discussions, Ambassador Gberie emphasized the importance of strong political commitments to International Humanitarian Law, noting that adherence to IHL is essential for safeguarding civilian lives and ensuring humane treatment in conflict situations.

Participants engaged in in-depth deliberations on the current state of IHL, identifying gaps and challenges that hinder effective compliance. Technical experts shared experiences and best practices from different national contexts, fostering collaboration and mutual learning among participating states.

The draft political declaration under development seeks to establish a clear framework through which states can reaffirm and strengthen their commitment to humanitarian principles in military operations. The initiative aims to galvanize political will and encourage countries to uphold their legal obligations under IHL, thereby improving protection for vulnerable populations affected by armed conflict.

Ambassador Gberie’s participation highlights the Embassy of Sierra Leone’s active role in international efforts to promote peace, security, and human rights. By supporting stronger political commitments to IHL, the Embassy continues to contribute to global initiatives that prioritize humanity and dignity in times of conflict.

As the retreat concluded, participants expressed renewed urgency and commitment to collective action. The engagement reflects a shared vision of a future in which international humanitarian law is respected and upheld, reducing the impact of war on civilians and fostering a more humane approach to conflict resolution worldwide.
