The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has lifted all remaining sanctions imposed on the Republic of Guinea and individuals involved in its transitional governance, following a high-level meeting of the ECOWAS Mediation and Security Council held on January 28, 2026.

The decision was reached after an assessment of Guinea’s transitional process and prevailing regional dynamics. According to ECOWAS, the sanctions have been lifted with immediate effect, marking a significant milestone in Guinea’s political transition and its relations with the regional bloc.

The lifting of sanctions represents a major step toward normalizing Guinea’s engagement within the ECOWAS community and strengthening stability across the sub-region. It also reflects ECOWAS’ continued commitment to supporting democratic governance, constitutional order, and the rule of law, while encouraging the transitional authorities to remain on course toward restoring democratic institutions.

In addition, Guinea has been granted full reintegration into ECOWAS decision-making bodies and regional integration mechanisms. This development enables the country to actively participate in regional deliberations on critical issues, including peace and security, trade, and economic development, thereby enhancing cooperation within the bloc.

ECOWAS leaders urged Guinea’s transitional authorities to prioritize the establishment of democratic institutions and the restoration of constitutional governance. They further emphasized the need for inclusive political dialogue, calling on the authorities to engage political actors, civil society organizations, and the wider public to foster national consensus and ensure a smooth transition to democratic rule.

The ECOWAS Commission has been mandated to continue monitoring developments in Guinea and to provide technical and political support to the transitional authorities during this critical phase. The meeting also reaffirmed the collective commitment of ECOWAS, the African Union, and the United Nations to collaborate closely in promoting lasting peace, stability, and democratic governance in the country.

In a region often challenged by political instability, the lifting of sanctions on Guinea marks a positive step toward strengthening governance and reinforcing democratic norms in West Africa. As Guinea advances on its path toward political renewal, the international community remains cautiously optimistic and supportive, hopeful for a transparent and credible transition that reflects the will of the Guinean people.
