In a strategic move to modernize the Sierra Leone Police (SLP), the UNDP Resident Representative, Fred Ampiah, recently held a key meeting with Inspector General William Faiyia Sellu and his senior team.

The partnership is designed to support the SLP’s transition into a more efficient, accountable, and community-focused police service, emphasizing institutional reform, systems strengthening, and improved service delivery.

During the meeting, UNDP reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing the operational capacity of the SLP as part of broader national efforts to promote security and uphold the rule of law. Discussions focused on implementing reforms aimed at refining policing practices and building trust between the police and local communities.

A core objective of the partnership is to establish modern policing standards that prioritize accountability, transparency, and responsiveness. By strengthening internal systems, the SLP aims to better meet public needs while enhancing community engagement and confidence in law enforcement.

As part of the reform initiatives, the UNDP will provide technical assistance and tailored training programs to equip police officers with the skills and resources necessary to address contemporary security challenges effectively. These programs are intended to cultivate a police force that not only protects citizens but also actively engages with communities to foster peaceful coexistence.

The initiative aligns with Sierra Leone’s national development goals and is viewed as critical for promoting democratic governance, public safety, and national stability. Inspector General Sellu expressed optimism about the collaboration, noting that the partnership would empower the police to serve and protect more effectively.

This engagement between the UNDP and the SLP represents a significant step toward creating a modern, professional, and citizen-centered police service, contributing to a safer and more secure Sierra Leone.
