The Sierra Leone Basketball Federation (SLBF) has successfully concluded its National Youth Camp, held to prepare players for the upcoming National Women’s Basketball League across the country.
During the closing ceremony, Nathalie Mansaray, Director of Women’s Basketball in Sierra Leone, emphasized that the training aimed to ready the women’s team for the league. She noted that the players had been in camp over the past three weekends, engaging in skill development sessions and friendly games.
Reflecting on last year’s league, Mansaray mentioned that six clubs participated, and she hopes to maintain or exceed that number in the upcoming season. She praised the significant progress players have made in developing their basketball skills, noting visible improvements compared to previous training sessions. She expressed joy in seeing young girls actively learning and embracing the game.
Mansaray highlighted that player development remains a primary focus in Sierra Leone, with efforts aimed at identifying and nurturing talent for the National League. She stressed the importance of creating a supportive environment where female players can hone their skills.
The goal, she added, is to expand Sierra Leone’s talent pool. Last year, the team participated in the first international friendly held in Freetown and, in December, competed in two friendly matches in Liberia opportunities that allowed players to gain international exposure and showcase their abilities.
Plans are also underway to extend basketball programs to schools, with ongoing initiatives in high schools and community programs at Victoria Park, demonstrating the Federation’s commitment to grassroots development.
Anifa Bangura, a point guard, described the youth camp as “timely and valuable,” expressing gratitude to the Federation for prioritizing players’ growth. She added that she looks forward to a more competitive and exciting National Women’s Basketball League.
