As Sierra Leone observed National Remembrance Day, AWE Academy on Wednesday, 21 January, joined Sierra Leoneans across the country in honouring and remembering the lives lost during the nation’s brutal 11-year civil war, describing the fallen as national heroes whose sacrifices must never be forgotten.

To commemorate the day, pupils, staff, and management of the school held a solemn candlelight procession. The peaceful march began at Shellmingo (Beef-Gron) and culminated at the school’s campus on Belmoh Street, Temgbewabu Section. The procession brought together pupils, staff, and community members in a moment of solemn reflection as they paid tribute to the victims of the conflict.

The candlelight procession symbolized hope, peace, and a collective resolve to ensure that the dark chapters of the nation’s history are never repeated.

Speaking during the programme, the Proprietor of AWE Academy, Mr. Timothy Okekearu, explained that the candlelight activity was intentionally organized to signify that the memories and sacrifices of those who died during the war would continue to shine forever in Sierra Leone. He referenced biblical teachings, noting that “light and darkness cannot dwell together,” and emphasised the importance of peace, unity, and moral guidance in nation-building.

The event was further enriched by a deeply moving musical performance from Senior Timothy Okekearu Jr., who rendered a solemn song titled “Sorry Salone.” The performance drew emotional responses from the audience and reinforced the need for national reflection, reconciliation, and forgiveness.

Additionally, the Head Teacher and Principal of AWE Academy delivered presentations highlighting the significance of National Remembrance Day, the lessons of the civil war, and the responsibility of young people to uphold peace, tolerance, and patriotism. They encouraged pupils to see themselves as ambassadors of peace and unity within their communities.

The programme concluded with prayers and reflections, reaffirming AWE Academy’s commitment to instilling values of peace, empathy, and responsible citizenship in its pupils, while contributing meaningfully to national healing and remembrance.
