The Minister of Gender and Children’s Affairs, Isata Mahoi, has led a high-powered delegation to Port Loko, reaffirming the government’s commitment to ending gender-based violence (GBV) and safeguarding the rights of women and girls.
The visit supported by the European Union aims to strengthen partnerships and advance national initiatives focused on combating GBV.
The engagement coincides with the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign, observed annually from November 25 to December 10. This year’s theme, “UNiTE to End Digital Violence Against All Women and Girls,” emphasizes the growing threat of online abuse and the urgent need for comprehensive protection measures. Minister Mahoi’s presence in Port Loko underscores the severity of GBV, which affects one in three women worldwide.
The European Union has reiterated its commitment to supporting Sierra Leone’s efforts to eradicate GBV, recognizing its profound impact on individuals, families, and national development. The partnership seeks to promote gender equality, empower women and girls, and strengthen access to justice for survivors.
The 16 Days of Activism campaign calls for collective action to prevent GBV, protect survivors, and ensure accountability for perpetrators. The government, the EU, and other partners are encouraged to work collaboratively to build a safer, more inclusive environment for all women and girls.
