Rt. Hon. Speaker Segepoh Solomon Thomas has signalled a tougher stance on parliamentary discipline, cautioning Members of Parliament that persistent lateness will no longer be treated as a minor lapse but as a breach of privilege and responsibility.

Addressing the House, Speaker Thomas emphasized that the 10:00 AM start time is not optional, reminding MPs that their privileges come with clear obligations. He warned that the leadership of the House will no longer overlook habitual tardiness, noting that punctual attendance is essential to maintaining the integrity of parliamentary proceedings.

While acknowledging the “commendable improvement” shown by many legislators in recent weeks, the Speaker made it clear that accountability must apply across the board. In an unprecedented move, he announced that he will now publicly identify MPs who are absent from their seats at the start of plenary sessions.

“Parliament cannot function effectively if its Members are not present and ready to work,” he cautioned, stressing that delays undermine not only parliamentary business but also public trust in elected representatives.

His declaration comes at a critical time, as Parliament enters a period marked by major legislative reviews, budget scrutiny, and intensified oversight activities. The Speaker’s reinforced measures are widely seen as an effort to restore discipline and ensure that national business proceeds without avoidable interruptions.

With these accountability measures now in effect, MPs face increasing pressure to uphold the standards expected of them as Parliament strives for greater efficiency and professionalism.
