The Sierra Leone Airports Authority (SLAA) has taken a major step in modernizing the nation’s aviation sector with the official launch of Performance-Based Navigation (PBN) at Freetown International Airport.

This milestone follows the recent commissioning of the ultramodern airport terminal by His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio, which has already led to a significant increase in flight operations and passenger traffic. Building on this momentum, SLAA is advancing aviation safety and efficiency through the adoption of advanced satellite-based navigation systems.

SLAA General Manager, Mr. Jack Massaquoi, reaffirmed Sierra Leone’s commitment to developing a safe, environmentally responsible, and cost-effective aviation system. He highlighted that the project is being implemented by the African Flight Procedure Programme, with technical support from the Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority (SLCAA).

Minister of Transport and Aviation, Ambassador Fanday Turay, explained that PBN replaces traditional ground-based navigation aids with modern satellite technology, enabling aircraft to navigate with far greater precision. He emphasized that this transition would revolutionize flight operations at Freetown International Airport and firmly align Sierra Leone with global aviation modernization standards.

Key Benefits of PBN Implementation include enhanced safety, particularly during adverse weather conditions. Reduced fuel consumption and shorter flight times. Lower operational costs for airlines. Decreased environmental impact through more efficient and greener procedures

“With PBN, the Sierra Leone Airports Authority strengthens its position as a credible air navigation service provider in West Africa. This milestone ensures our skies remain safe, efficient, and sustainable, while positioning Sierra Leone as a regional leader in aviation modernization,” said Mr. Massaquoi.

This achievement underscores SLAA’s commitment to improving aviation governance, investing in modern technologies, and prioritizing safety while supporting continued growth at Sierra Leone’s primary international gateway.
