Gender Minister Champions Child Rights at African Children’s Parliament Forum

Sierra Leone’s Minister of Gender and Children’s Affairs, Dr. Isata Mahoi, has reaffirmed the country’s commitment to protecting and empowering children at the 1st African Forum of Children’s Parliament.

Addressing the forum in Morocco, Dr. Mahoi highlighted Sierra Leone’s recent legislative milestones, including the enactment of the Child Rights Act 2025.

The Minister emphasized the importance of child participation in shaping national policies, citing the influential role of the Children’s Forum Network (CFN) in promoting the voices and interests of children. She noted that more than 5,000 adolescents participated in consultations that informed the new Child Rights Act an indication of the government’s commitment to listening to and elevating young voices.

Sierra Leone’s Child Rights Act 2025 provides a comprehensive framework for safeguarding children’s rights and welfare. It is complemented by other key legislation such as the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act 2024 and the Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment Act 2022.

Dr. Mahoi’s participation in the forum underscores Sierra Leone’s dedication to regional and global efforts to advance child rights and child empowerment.

In conclusion, the Minister called for collective action to protect children from harm and to ensure their holistic development, stressing that investing in children is an investment in Africa’s future.
