The Government of Sierra Leone, through the Ministry of Health and Sanitation, has launched a nationwide Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination campaign targeting more than one million girls aged 11–18.

The launch event, held in Freetown, marks a major milestone in the country’s ongoing efforts to eliminate cervical cancer.

The HPV vaccine is a vital tool in preventing cervical cancer, which remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths among women in Sierra Leone. As part of the campaign, eligible girls across the country will receive the vaccine, which provides protection against the virus responsible for most cervical cancer cases.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Minister of Health and Sanitation, Dr. Austin Demby, highlighted the importance of the initiative in safeguarding the health of girls and women.

“This campaign is a critical step toward protecting our girls and women from a preventable disease,” he said.

The HPV vaccination campaign forms a key component of Sierra Leone’s National Cancer Control Strategy, which aims to reduce both the incidence and mortality of cervical cancer. Supported by international partners, the initiative will be implemented in partnership with local health authorities nationwide.

The launch represents a significant achievement for Sierra Leone and underscores the government’s commitment to improving the health and well-being of its citizens, especially women and girls.
