The Elders Council for Development on Friday, October 31, 2025, awarded scholarships to 20 pupils from various schools across Freetown, as part of its annual education support program.
The initiative specifically targets Junior Secondary School (JSS1–JSS3) pupils from marginalized and underprivileged communities, continuing the Council’s commitment to improving access to quality education for vulnerable children.
Emmanuel Toel, the Organizing Secretary, speaking at the award ceremony, explained that this year’s focus on the JSS category was intended to ensure better monitoring and long-term academic support for deserving students.
“We want to ensure that the limited resources we have are used effectively,” Toel explained. “By focusing on the JSS level this year, we can closely track the progress of these pupils and provide real, impactful support.”
Robert Salia Kamara, Chairman of the Council, described education as a transformative tool and reaffirmed the Council’s unwavering dedication to supporting underprivileged pupils.
“Education remains the greatest weapon to change the world,” Kamara stated. “That is why we continue to invest in these children to help them build brighter futures for themselves and their communities.”
Mrs. Theresa Soko, the Deputy Chairlady, expressed gratitude to parents, donors, and media partners for their ongoing support. She encouraged parents to ensure their children remain committed to their studies in order to maintain the scholarship.
The Elders Council for Development, a non-profit, community-based organization with the slogan “We Are Better Together”, funds the scholarship program through contributions from members and generous donors. Over the past three years, the Council has provided support to hundreds of pupils, covering school fees, uniforms, and learning materials.
Peter Smart, the Public Relations Officer, confirmed that this year’s scholarship package includes full scholarships, uniforms, and school supplies for all 20 beneficiaries.
Parents and pupils who attended the event praised the Council for its continued efforts in supporting education and fostering community development.
