KONO E.P.A MANAGER RAISES ENVIRONMENTAL ALARM

The newly transferred Environment Protection Agency (EPA) Regional Manger Kono Office, Bashiru Kargbo has revealed to this medium that, Kono District is in a state of environmental emergency and that there is urgent need for everybody to put hands on desk to confront the situation.

He noted that the district is in a state of environmental emergency as water bodies have become polluted due to different activities ranging from mining, poor or cruel agricultural activities and grazing of animals, among other things.

Bashiru Kargbo made the pronouncement when discussing with our correspondent this year’s Environment Day which was observed on Saturday 5th June 2021 with the theme, Ecosystem Restoration.

Every year, the World Environment Day is celebrated on June 5 across the globe. It is one of the biggest events organized by the United Nations with the aim to generate awareness on the significance of nature.

The day is also observed to let people know the value and importance of nature and remind them that the environment should be taken care of.

This year’s celebration Mr Kargbo said was unique as it marked the formal launch of the UN decade on Ecosystem Restoration 2021-2030.

As he commended stakeholders from all walks of life who attended this year’s World Environment Day Ceremony held in Bumpeh, Nimikor Chiefdom towards the protection of the Environment, Bashiru Kargbo disclosed that, his office has embarked on robust compliance monitoring within the district, noting that, anyone found wanting will face the full penalty of the law.

He therefore urged all timber loggers in the district to obtain the Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) license as they will not be leaving any stone unturned in pursuing those lawless timber loggers.
